Ricky Ponting Backs Khaleel Ahmed for Indian Test Squad Ahead of Crucial Series

As India prepare for a grueling series of international Test matches, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has backed Khaleel Ahmed. He advocated the left-arm pacer's inclusion in the Indian Test squad.

Ponting coached Khaleel during his tenure with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He believes the 26-year-old could help India's pace attack. The Men in Blue gear up for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia.

Khaleel Ahmed has shown promise in limited-overs formats. He notably contributed to India's recent T20I series in Zimbabwe. His ability to swing the ball and create angles with his left-arm deliveries makes him a unique asset. This is especially useful as India predominantly have right-arm pace options.

"Someone like Khaleel Ahmed could find himself on the Test tour," Ponting expressed on a recent episode of The ICC Review."

"A left-armer would be ideal for them to have in their touring squad. He can provide a different angle and variation that could be crucial in challenging batting conditions," Ponting added.

Established fast bowlers Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to feature in the lineup. Khaleel's inclusion could add depth and variety to the attack.

"Shami will be back fit by then. Siraj, we know, will be thereabout somewhere. Bumrah is going nowhere. So, both teams are going to line up strongly," Ponting added,

India are set for a packed schedule, starting with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh and three red-ball matches at home against New Zealand. The five-match Test series in Australia will be the biggest challenge. The series is a part of the 2024–25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

This series will be particularly significant, including a day-night match in Adelaide, where the pink ball match will be closely watched.

Under Rohit Sharma's leadership, India aims to replicate its recent successes in Australia. India won the previous two Test series played Down Under. Now the Men in Blue hope to maintain its dominance and secure another series victory.

While Ponting advocates for Khaleel Ahmed, India also has another promising left-arm pacer, Arshdeep Singh. He is known for his accuracy and composure under pressure. Arshdeep has been making waves in limited-overs cricket. He could be a strong candidate for Test selection.

Khaleel and Arshdeep bring distinct skills that could benefit India's Test squad. It can be especially useful in Australian conditions, where pace and bounce play pivotal roles. The selection will depend on who can adapt best to the rigorous demands of Test cricket. Another thing to consider is who can contribute across different phases of the game.

Facing the reigning World Test Championship winners, Australia, in their backyard is a challenge for India. With some smart selections, India hope to field a balanced squad capable of overcoming the formidable Australian lineup.
